What is Wireless?

A wireless network, or WiFi network, is a convenient way to connect several computers to each other, as well as to a single Internet connection. You can do this without the need to run Ethernet cables, and frees you to work anywhere you can carry your laptop. ( For example, in the back yard by the pool. )

How does it work?

A wireless network uses radio waves to send information back and forth, just like your cell phone. To set one up, you will need a WiFi Router or Access Point, and you will need a WiFi Adapter for each computer that will be using the wireless signal.

Are there disadvantages?

For all it's convenience, WiFi networks do have to contend with some issues that wired networks do not. For one, it isn't always as reliable as a wired network. This can be due to interference from other wireless signals, cell phone signals, studs in walls, large appliances, etc. Another disadvantage is a reduced speed when compared to a wired network. While each computer on a wired network will receive a full 100 megabits of data per second, your wireless network can only supply 54 megabits of data per second split between each computer on the wireless signal.

One final consideration is security. A WiFi signal doesn't just stop at the edge of your property. Anyone with a laptop nearby could connect to and use your wireless signal, surfing the Internet or possibly looking at your personal files. The good news is that security issues can be abated by implementing some basic security on your network.

So which is better?

There isn't a "One Size Fits All" answer to that question as it really depends on your particular needs. An Avanti technician can analyze your situation and help you select the network type that is right for you.
